The 5 Stages of Mediation

1

Initial Consultation

Meet with your mediator to discuss your situation, goals, and what to expect. This session establishes ground rules for respectful communication.

2

Information Gathering

Exchange financial information, asset details, parenting information, and other relevant documents so discussions are grounded in shared facts.

3

Issue Identification

Work together to identify all issues that need resolution: property division, custody, support, and more. Prioritize which topics to address first.

4

Discussion & Possible Agreement

Work through each issue with your mediator as process facilitator. When possible, identify practical options and document areas of agreement.

5

Review & Next Steps

Clients review the written record, consider attorney review, and use official court resources or counsel for filing questions.

Important Disclaimer: This process guide is general information only, not legal, financial, tax, or accounting advice. Mediation can help people discuss options and document possible agreements, but courts process and finalize divorce filings. For legal rights, filing questions, or case-specific advice, consult an attorney or official court resources.
