What it is

Not couples therapy. A decision about couples therapy.

Discernment counseling came out of the University of Minnesota, for couples where one person is leaning out of the marriage and the other is leaning in.

How long
Short. Usually one to five sessions.
Who’s in the room
Both of you, plus time with the counselor one-on-one, so each person can say what they can’t say in front of the other.
The goal
Not to fix the marriage, and not to end it. To choose, with more clarity, which of three paths to take.
  1. 1

Keep things as they are, for now.

No big change yet. You go on as you are and revisit later.

  2. 2

    Move toward separation or divorce.

One of you, or both, decides the marriage is ending.

  3. 3

Six months of couples therapy, divorce off the table.

Both of you commit to a real effort, for a set time, before anyone decides.

Why a mediator made this list

I’m a divorce mediator.
This isn’t a divorce page.

I have a problem. Some folks book a consult with me before they’ve decided on divorce. One spouse is sure. The other isn’t.

Mediation is for working out how. It isn’t built for whether, and starting it early doesn’t do either of them any favors. Discernment counseling is built for whether. So when I meet a couple like that, I send them here.

Questions

What couples ask before they call a counselor.

Do we both have to go?

Yes. Discernment counseling is for couples, so both of you attend. You don't have to agree on anything to go, including whether you want to be there. One person leaning out and one leaning in is the situation it was built for.

How long does it take?

Usually one to five sessions. Each counselor sets their own session length and schedule, so ask when you reach out.

What if we still disagree at the end?

Then that's what you know at the end. The counselor's job is to help each of you see the situation clearly and choose a path. It isn't a promise that you'll choose the same one. Ask the counselor you pick how they handle it.

How is this different from couples therapy?

Couples therapy assumes you're both working on the marriage. Discernment counseling doesn't assume that. It helps you decide whether to try.

What does it cost? Does insurance cover it?

It depends on the counselor. Rates, and whether they take insurance, are on their websites or one phone call away. I haven't listed prices here because I can't keep them accurate.

What if my spouse won't go?

Then it isn't discernment counseling, which needs both of you. Several of these counselors also see individuals, and a session on your own is a reasonable place to start.

Is this list a recommendation?

It's a list, not an endorsement. I checked that each counselor says on their own website that they offer discernment counseling. I haven't sat in their sessions. They're listed alphabetically within each area. Pick the one who fits the two of you.

I'm a counselor. How do I get listed, or change my listing?

Email flannelpeoplemediation@gmail.com or text (763) 316-8323. If you'd rather be off the page, say so and I'll take it down the same day. There's no fee to be listed, and there never will be.
